Summary:

In the foreseeable future ...

As Earth becomes a natural disaster zone, the humans on the WESS (World Experimental Space Station) fight to save the environment and humankind. They're young prize-winning scientists in fields of ecology, botany, chemistry, geology and medicine. The aim of WESS is to find ways to replenish the fertility of the Earth.

On the face of the planet, famine riots erupt, buildings topple to the sea and the heads of power convene in a safe room to discuss the future of mankind. Meanwhile, the scientists aboard WESS have their own problems. With equipment knocked out by space debris, someone has to fix it. And the last supply shipment from Earth, before the lights went out, was mysteriously contaminated.

The Players

Drs. Matt and Trish Robinson, American married couple, want to be the first divorce in space. They hate each other. Due to technical delays they haven't received their divorce docs. Meanwhile, Trish steams with desire for handsome Dr. Manuel Sánchez from Spain.

Also on board are flirtatious Dr. Anita Regen of Austria, and cultured but insane Japanese scientist Dr. Sakura Hayashi. Space junk interference and mysteriously low memory cause brownouts and power interference on the space station. And Matt Robinson can't get off the diazepam, especially when he finds out even more dire news.

A little harmless flirtation ...

Wrapped up with the crew are two delivery persons from Earth, Lance Elliot, an insufferably handsome space pilot, 26 years old, from Canada; and Meredith Plainly, a 44 year old drunk who lives to forget.

Private contractors, they run the Centennial Centaur, a ship not likely to pass a safety inspection; but they're the only ones willing to risk uncertain death and an orbiting belt of space garbage to supply the crew of the WESS.

Deep below the main engine rooms, a pile of compost belches and comes alive. It's created from a variety of experimental plants, fibrous waste, special fertility preparations.

The compost heap pulses and grows intelligence, as slime molds and fibrous filaments become the essence of life and nutrition. Worms and maggots enrich its body. The more it thinks, the more it knows. The humans have created a monster.

Now it's coming for them. Can they escape the mutant compost, or just become recycled waste in a fermenting self-replicating heap on a doomed ship high above a dying planet?

Killer Compost has a life of its own ... and it's spreading.
