While April sets out to beguile a womanizing Baron, a magician's lovely assistant has a series of close calls with death, and is desperate to find out who's trying to kill her and why. Meanwhile, terrified for her safety, the Baroness hires Reiker to protect her. But where's the connection?

As the mystery deepens, fraud turns deadly and false turns abound. What's real, and what's all smoke and mirrors?

Murder in the Cards takes place in Victorian era Germany, known then as the German Empire, in the fictional town of Mittelstadt. A comfortable community of white collar industry and family farms, it's about an hour's train ride south of Frankfurt, making it central to the Rhine, Odenwald, Castle Frankenstein and the Black Forest in southwest Germany.

Murder in the Cards is the exciting third novella of the Reiker For Hire Victorian crime trilogy. Don't miss Death Cruise and Hotel of Horror.

Even into modern times, fortune telling with playing cards, or cartomancy, was a popular entertainment or source of advice. New branches of science delved into the unknown mind. The Victorian mentality was eager for stimulation and growth.

Romance and wealth were hot topics in the fortune teller's domain. The possibility of contacting loved ones in the afterlife also compelled many to call on mediums and hold seances. Allure of the unknown offered arcane mystique to rich and poor alike, regardless of gender or social class.

Lora Ley Fantasy Fiction

Reiker is first introduced in the Lora Ley series of fantasy fiction novels which also takes place in Mittelstadt. In this series of six, inspired by German mythology, Lora is a half-Nyx orphan who discovers her true nature in Victorian era Germany.

With her life-mate and friends such as Skoldt the vegan Norwegian Brook Horse she travels to realms of gods and demons; goes back to the time of heroes and dragons; attends a deadly fairy tale ball at the Enchanted Castle, visits the Realm of the Undead, encounters quirky characters, helpful and hostile magic, and battles the forces of evil. Lora grows from a rebellious schoolgirl to a true warrior woman.
